Leading a Quiet Life

Our main purpose on this earth is the please God, and we should be showing that through our actions, words, and thoughts. In a nutshell, we please God by living a holy life; here in 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul takes note of four different things on how we should live. These things have been mentioned several times in the bible, and its repetition just makes it more clear to us how important it is to live in a holy and worthy manner.

avoid sexual immorality and impurity.
I think the world today has corrupted the concept of sex, and as God had intended it to be something special between a man and a women, society today was twisted it and has made it about self pleasure and self indulgence. God calls us to only have sex after one has married, as it builds a strong bond between the two. At the same time, if you are single, than it is also a challenge with the media all around you, but we must muster the strength to stand firm and live lives of purity. “If you love me, keep my commands." - John 14:15

loving one another.
Our God is love, and love is pretty much the foundation of our faith. Without the love of our Father, there would be no death and resurrection of Christ, which would result in no gospel, no repentance, and no eternal life and hope. God has loved us from the start and in return we should follow and love those around us as well, whether we know them or not. It doesn't have to be a strong massive act of love, it can be simply holding the door for someone, or letting someone borrow your pen. As scripture says, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." - Matthew 25:40

have your daily life win the respect of outsiders.
This does not mean to boast on what you are doing, but how you act and how you present yourself should be loud enough for others to see Christ working in you. A lot of God's commandments go against how the world works, and if we follow those commands, it will be made known that something is different about you. When you have won the respect of others, they will want to know more about who you are, and potentially who you follow. In daily life, in trials, in celebrations, may God be seen in you. "These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." - 1 Peter 1:7

be aware for his return.
Our Lord will return. Towards the end of the chapter, Paul warns us to be aware and awake for he may come back at any time. He says that the Lord will return loudly and gloriously, that the dead with rise, and the living will be taking into heaven with him. Always be on guard with yourself. There is no time to waste, we have to take our faith seriously, working out our salvation and be truly devoted followers. Not on the fence, or lukewarm, you are either for or against the Lord and when he returns he will judge accordingly to your faith and your actions.  "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth." - Revelation 3:15-16

verse of the day: 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
11 ...make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
