Paul's Address - Part 2

Paul moves on to the next concern that has been causing divisions in the church of Corinth, spiritual gifts. God has given each of us a special unique spiritual gift, to be used for the Lord, in serving one another in love. Have you discovered yours? At many times, others may feel like that one gift is more important than another, but Paul discusses the importance of all the gifts. There are many gifts that we may be given.

wise counsel
clear understanding
simple trust
healing the sick
miraculous acts
proclamation
distinguishing between spirits
speaking in tongues
interpretation of tongues
(1 Corinthians 12:8-10, The Message)

no matter what gift you are given, it is an important gift, strictly and specially appointed to you for a reason. Its the same in any group situation, everyone comes to the table with a different strength and together the result can be produced with efficiency. There is no gift that is higher than another. Paul illustrates this in verse 17, if the whole body was an eye, where would the sense of smell be? If everyone was gifted in proclamation, where would be the trust? the key to accountability and support?

At the same time, we need all parts for the instrument to work. This applies in real life to, in the human body, every single organ, tissue, and cell plays an important role. Without one, the body would not function effectively, or may not function at all. We need to find unity in the midst of diversity (v.20). The whole body of Christ is meant to work together, rejoice together and suffer together. One cannot take on the world alone, God created others for community and support, so use it and seek the friendships and relationships that will help you grow in Him.

Lastly, let us desire and seek these gifts, yearn to use these gifts in love for God and his glory (v.31).

You play a significant part in God's plan, in the midst of a massive community and world, you are pieced right in for a specific purpose.

verse of the day: 1 Corinthians 12:4-6
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
