"Food Offered to Idols"

As I read through 1 Corinthians 8, it came off really confusing, from talking about idolatry to food offering to idols, not to eat it, it was all a big mess, but after reading it a few more times, and referring to the commentary, it slowly became more and more clear.

This chapter was quite a history lesson. When Paul talks about offering food to idols, it is because during that time, pagan temples offered parts of animals to their respective idols and gods, and often it turned into a butcher shop setting. Paul tells them not to eat such foods because its the same as offering it to the idols, I guess you could say it is "unclean".

On the note of idolatry, Paul again reminds us that although there may be plenty of gods all around, our Lord Jesus Christ stands alone as the true God, "through whom all things and through whom we exist" (v. 6). Nowadays, these gods are disguised as everyday things, from relationships to money and materialism, we can easily find a "god" that we shouldn't be idolizing.

Back then, the pagans had feared the consequences of neglected worship towards the gods, and it always built tension for believers to worship the gods and our True God at the same time. Im sure each one of us have the same feeling, the tug or urge to turn to an idol instead of God, wanting the latest gadget or the relationship someone else has.

I challenge you to lay down you whole life to our Jesus Christ who infinitely satisfies, sustains and supplies. He is enough.

verse of the day: 1 Corinthians 8:6
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
