Set Free

I can really see Paul taking us through the entire Christian walk throughout Romans, leading us through the gospel, what it means to be a true believer of Christ, and its a great reminder for us. After Romans 5, where we now understand that we need Christ and through Him, we are saved, what now? And Paul addresses exactly that in the next chapter.

Christ dying for us on the cross showed God's love for us, and it symbolized the ultimate sacrifice, being truly victorious over all sin. As believers, we need to change and turn away from our old life and ways of sin. Baptism is brought up once again, as Paul explains that going into water represents the death of our old life, and rising out breathes a new life of a changed person. Through this, we have been freed from sin (v.6-7).

And because we are free, because we have become dedicated followers of Christ, we are called to offer our lives to Him. Nothing on this earth belongs to us, God had granted and blessed us with everything, and we're only to give back. Offer our body, our actions, our tongues in speech to God as instruments of righteousness (v.12-14).

Throughout the chapter, Paul continually uses the idea of slavery in both contexts, slaves to sin, and now slaves to righteousness, truly emphasizing how important this is, the dedication involved. When we are slaves to sin, everything we reap leads to death. But when we're slaves to righteousness, slaves to obedience, we reap holiness and eternal life (v.16, 18-19).

There's always a big big misconception thinking that once we turn to Christ, life is dandy, its perfect, no pain, just happiness, but thats completely misunderstood. Sin does continue to reside in us after we've dedicated our lives to Him, we're on this imperfect and corrupted earth, and we're still sinners. The change is that now we are not under the control of sin, and instead we have a great victorious God by our side, leading us to righteousness (v.22).

verse of the day: Romans 6:23
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
